Re-thinking how a Theory of Change can tell a more complex story

CLARISSA is a Child Labour focused programme - using a combination of action, research and innovation in their approach in South and South-Eastern Asia. Their participatory approach and adaptive learning meant a traditional Theory of Change flow chart was not working. To tell the story of the complex nested structure, the CLARISSA team requested our help to re-think how a Theory of Change could work.

Through collaborative workshops with the team, we worked to understand the layers of narrative, the groups and organisations acting within the narrative, and the key goals of the visualisation. Streamlining the content created a concentric circles framework, within to home real world examples. We chose to use animation to bring the audience on the journey, building layers step by step to explain the structure, before the animated diagram becomes interactive, encouraging deeper exploration. We collaborated with our friends at Good Praxis to build the interactive microsite, seamlessly integrating it into the CLARISSA programme website.
